Kids Eating Right-Nutrition and Exercise for Life, or KERNEL, for short, connects volunteers interested in health, science, and nutrition education with the opportunity to teach children about healthy eating and living at farmers markets throughout Spokane. Volunteers with KERNEL work in the KERNEL booth at farmer's markets and guide children through a small activity while talking to them about healthy eating and living in ways they can understand. In exchange for their time, children receive KERNEL cash, which they can use to purchase fruits and vegetables at farmers markets. We designed this program then to not only teach children about health and food but to also provide increased access to healthy food, foster communication skills, and inspire children from a young age to participate in their communities’ farmers markets and support local the local economy.
We need volunteers each Thursday afternoon and evening from 2:30 to 7pm at the Perry Street Farmers Market located on the South Hill of Spokane at 924 S. Perry Street. Opportunities start in mid-May and go through till the end of October. For more information or to sign up, either email Connor at or fill out a volunteer application at Thank you!
