Who We Are

Shaw Middle School, located in Spokane’s historic Hillyard community, is committed to preparing students for success in high school, college, and beyond. As an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school, we provide students with the skills, support, and encouragement to thrive academically and socially. A key part of our mission is building strong mentoring relationships, and we are excited to partner with Gonzaga University students who want to make a difference. By serving as AVID tutors and mentors, Gonzaga volunteers help our middle school students develop confidence, strengthen study skills, and see themselves as future college students. This partnership provides meaningful opportunities for Gonzaga students to serve, lead, and inspire the next generation right here in Spokane.

What We Do

At Shaw Middle School, our AVID elective is designed to help students develop the skills, confidence, and mindset needed to succeed in middle school, high school, and eventually college. In AVID, students focus on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading),  study strategies, strategic life planning, and goal setting, while also building their identity as future college students. A key part of the elective is the tutoring component, where students work in small groups with trained college tutors to deepen their understanding of core subjects through collaboration and inquiry. By supporting the AVID elective, Gonzaga volunteers play a vital role in mentoring, guiding, and inspiring students to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams of higher education.
