Who We Are

Science in Action! (SIA!) is an outreach program through the Biology and Chemistry & Biochemistry Departments, but we are open to ALL majors. The mission of the Science in Action! program is to promote enthusiasm of STEM subjects and increase scientific literacy for young minds within our local community. Through SIA! Gonzaga students are paired into groups with their peers and then paired with a local 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade elementary classroom. GU students will visit their partner classroom once a week for seven to eight weeks during the Fall or Spring semester to lead hands-on inquiry based science activities with students. This program benefits participants in multiple ways: the elementary students are excited to learn from college role models in their classroom; the Gonzaga students gain teaching experience, build community connection, and serve as role-models and ambassadors for Gonzaga; the local teachers enjoy having enrichment activities (with all materials provided) that enhance their curriculum and increase their students’ enthusiasm for science. The Science in Action! program has been in existence for 14+ years and has utilized 1,000+ GU volunteers to reach over 8,000+ elementary students! All majors are welcome to apply, training provided. We hope you will consider volunteering with our program!
