Volunteer: Transitions: Women's Hearth

Women’s Hearth: The Women's Hearth is a safe, welcoming community that promotes growth and well-being in body, mind, and spirit for women of diverse backgrounds. The Hearth fosters nurturing relationships, encourages self-determination, and advocates for change in systems that oppress women. The Hearth provides free services that promote growth and healing including: over 70 groups and classes per month, access to resources and referrals for various social services, a technology center with free access to internet and computers, and access to basic needs such as showers, food, and hygiene products. Must identify as a woman to serve here.

Hours:

Monday: 9am-1:30pm

Tuesday: 9am-3:30pm

Wednesday: 11am-3:30pm

Thursday: 9am-3:30pm

Friday: 9am-3:30pm

Volunteer Roles: (Commitment of 30 volunteer hours is required; does not have to be completed in one term.)

Arts & Crafts Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly group and offer instruction on simple art projects. No expertise needed, just enthusiasm for making art and working with people. All materials are provided onsite. Hygiene & Health Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly or biweekly group on topics relating to health and hygiene. This may include: instructions on basic hygiene, hygiene-related diseases, sexual health, preventative care, and related wellness topics. This would be a great opportunity for a volunteer with a background or career interest in nursing, physical education, nutritional science, or social work. Sewing Circle Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly sewing circle. We encourage the group leader to offer some instruction as needed, or try creative sewing projects, but the circle can also be an opportunity for curious beginners to try sewing for the first time.  All materials are provided onsite. Knit & Crochet Group Leader: This volunteer will lead our weekly knit and crochet group, which is typically held on Fridays, but can be changed to accommodate a group leader’s schedule. Historically, this group has been a mixture of beginners who need instruction on either knitting or crocheting, and experienced knitters and crocheters who simply enjoy the company. All materials are provided onsite. Cooking Class Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly or biweekly cooking class. The curriculum and instructions for the class have already been created and will be easy for a new group leader to follow. A volunteer will simply need to bring recipe ideas and an enthusiasm for cooking. A food handlers permit is encouraged but not required, as staff onsite already have food handlers permits and will assist. All materials are provided onsite, and we encourage volunteers to utilize our food pantry and get creative with ingredients! Program Assistant Internship: In this new volunteer position, program assistants will provide support to staff and participants at the front desk of Women’s Hearth. Tasks will include checking in participants, answering phones, communicating with participants, and assisting as needed during daily operations or special events. Volunteers will always be partnered with a staff member on the floor, and the Volunteer & Activities Coordinator will provide training and supervision during this internship. This is a great resume-building opportunity for anyone discerning a career in social work to learn about shelter operations, connect with our unhoused neighbors, and gain valuable direct service experience. The minimum time commitment is 4 hours per week, though students completing the internship for credit will base their hours around course requirements. We are flexible with scheduling but do ask for consistency and follow-through from all interns. Winter Clean Up: The Women's Hearth, Transitions, is a drop-in center for women experiencing poverty and homelessness. Join us in keeping the Hearth warm and clean by helping us with deep cleaning. Women and men volunteers welcome!

Volunteer: STAR Afterschool Program Volunteer

What is STAR?

The mission of STAR (Storytelling, Teaching Artists, Arts Integration, and Resilience) is to provide creative education through culturally responsive frameworks, with access to the arts and technology for 3rd through 5th graders at Holmes and Garfield elementary schools. STAR creates a safe, consistent learning space with Lead Teachers and volunteers who cultivate trust, get to know participants' passions and interests, foster collaborative friendships, set the culture, and provide social-emotional learning tools that strengthen wellbeing beyond the classroom. STAR features professional Teaching Artists, designers, and innovators who guide students through projects that strengthen artistic skills, foster problem-solving, and introduce new mediums for creative expression.

STAR students love their volunteer mentors. If you enjoy spending time with 3rd-5th graders, they want to meet you! Mentors receive training from Spark Central to help encourage and develop STAR students’ creativity and build positive, playful relationships with them. Expertise in visual arts, performing arts, entrepreneurship, and other subjects explored in the program are not required - all you need is a desire to share yourself with these cool kids!

A year of STAR is organized into three units that engage students in investigative performance arts, technology and entrepreneurship, and large-scale visual art projects. In each project, Lead Teachers, Teaching Artists, and volunteer mentors guide and support students in identifying playful, impassioned ideas and developing them into powerful, tangible expressions of student voice.

Fall project: Atmosphere. Atmosphere gives artists the ability to tell stories with their breath. During this module, artists will create art with their breath and bodies as they dance, act, sing, and play.

Winter project: Satellite. It takes a lot of creatives, scientists, and innovators to create a satellite. For Satellite, artists will use technology to create art through animation, photography, film, science and entrepreneurship.

Spring project: Constellation. All the connections that make artists stronger. During Constellation, artists will gravitate toward tactile art that builds bridges between the previous units. The understanding of motion makes our paintings stronger. Thinking in 3D makes us better sculptors. Artists can expect to make art bigger and better than ever, on and off the canvas.

Time commitment:
Mentors are expected at one school (either Garfield or Holmes) from 3-5 PM for at least one day each week. This program runs Tue-Fri from October to June. We are hoping to find volunteers who are available for the entire school year, but if you are only available for one unit, that is alright, too.

Volunteer: Just One After School Program

Just One After-School Program

At Just One, our after-school program is more than just a place to hang out—it’s a dynamic, welcoming space where youth ages 10 and older can explore their creativity, connect with mentors, build leadership skills, and feel part of a positive community.

What We Offer

The program runs Monday through Friday, from 3 PM to 6 PM, during designated program months like March April May. Youth can drop in as their schedule allows—no need to attend every day.

Each week brings something new, including:

Arts & crafts

STEM & hands-on learning projects

Sports & physical activities

Mentoring & discussion circles

Field trips to explore the community

Free snacks or meals provided daily

Our field trips are a huge hit—whether we're visiting movies, Getair, resturants, thrift shops for budgeting lessons, or local parks for outdoor fun, we aim to expose youth to enriching experiences beyond their neighborhood.

Plus, we regularly invite in college interns, guest speakers, and community partners to lead special workshops and activities.

How to Join

The program is free, but families must create a parent account and register each youth for safety and communication purposes.

Once registered, youth are welcome to join us any day that fits their schedule—we’re a walk-in-friendly program, and there’s no requirement for daily attendance.

Why It Matters

Our after-school program provides more than just activities—it’s a place where youth feel safe, seen, and supported. Many of the youth we serve are navigating tough circumstances, and we’re here to offer consistency, encouragement, and meaningful opportunities to grow.

Whether they’re painting a mural, leading a group game, or discovering a new passion on a field trip—youth at Just One know they belong.

Volunteer: Just One Christmas Event

Just One's Christmas Gift Giveaway: Bringing Joy to Youth in Need

Each December, Just One hosts a Christmas event that mirrors the heart of Toys for Tots, but with a deeply personal touch rooted in community, relationships, and love.

This event ensures that hundreds of youth in our community feel seen, celebrated, and remembered during the holiday season—and it all starts with you.

How It Works

Parents and guardians register their children in advance and provide us with helpful information about each youth’s interests, hobbies, and age group. This helps us make sure each child receives gifts that feel personal and thoughtful.

We rally our community to collect donations—and this is where incredible people like you come in.

Community-Powered Giving

During the first week of December, we ask supporters to reach out to family, friends, workplaces, and neighbors to help us gather:

New and gently used toys

Teenager items are the hardest to find

Gifts suitable for ages 0 to 18

We welcome gently used items in good condition—giving a second life to treasures that still have love to give. Every single donation helps us stretch our reach further.

Once donations are collected, our team of staff and volunteers sorts all gifts by age groups to begin estimating how many youth we can support that year. We typically serve around 400 youth annually, made possible through the generosity of community members like you.

Registration Opens & Closes at Capacity

After estimating, we open registration to families and close it once we’ve reached our capacity based on the number of gifts we have available. This ensures we can give each registered child at least five meaningful gifts.

Distribution Weekend

The week before Christmas, staff and volunteers pack families with gift boxes:

The Friday and Saturday before christmas is pick-up time for families

Organized, welcoming, and clean up

Each child receives 5 hand-selected gifts from our team

This isn't just about toys—it’s about hope, dignity, and holiday magic for families facing hardship.

Why It Matters

In a season that can feel heavy for struggling families, this event lights up homes with joy. It’s one of our most cherished efforts—and none of it would be possible without people like you who believe in the power of community care.

What Is “Projects in a Bag”? Just One’s Thanksgiving Event

Each November, Just One launches our beloved “Projects in a Bag” event—a creative and heartwarming initiative designed to bring Thanksgiving joy, hands-on learning, and full holiday meals directly to the homes of youth and families in our community.

The Project Creation Week

In the week leading up to Thanksgiving, our staff and volunteers dedicate time during season to assemble customized “Project in a Bag” kits. These bags include:

Arts & crafts projects for family activities

STEM activities that spark creativity and learning

Meals to enjoy as a family

Fun surprises for youth of all ages

Each bag is thoughtfully put together with love and care, ensuring that every youth who receives one feels seen, valued, and celebrated.

Deliveries to Registered Families

Once the bags are complete, our team of volunteers and staff members personally deliver them to families who registered in advance. We prioritize areas with limited access to resources, making sure every family feels included in the holiday spirit—especially those who may not be able to attend in-person programming.

A Full Thanksgiving Meal—Thanks to Gonzaga’s Sodexo Catering

In addition to the project bags, each registered family receives a fully prepared Thanksgiving meal provided by our incredible partners at Gonzaga University’s Sodexo Catering. Every family member is accounted for, with hearty portions and thoughtful accommodations so no one is left out at the dinner table.

This partnership allows us to provide real, high-quality holiday meals—not just pantry items—which makes a huge difference for families facing food insecurity or financial strain during the season.

More Than a Meal—It’s Connection, Creativity, and Community

Projects in a Bag is more than a seasonal program—it’s a symbol of how we show up for one another. It gives youth something to look forward to, allows families to create together, and reminds our community that they are not alone.

Volunteer: Just One Halloween Event

How Just One’s Halloween Event Works

Every October, Just One transforms our after-school program into a vibrant hub of creativity, community, and spooky fun! Youth ages 10 and older spend the first few weeks of the month (October 1–17) diving into hands-on Halloween-themed art projects, building props, crafting decorations, and designing costumes—all while forming meaningful connections with mentors, peers, and college interns.

From October 20–23, the program shifts into production mode. During this time, youth ages 13+ help convert our entire facility into a fully immersive, youth-designed haunted house. Using tarps, lighting, hand-made props, and their own imaginations, participants turn our space into a thrilling maze filled with surprises, sound effects, and scares.

On October 24–25, the haunted house opens to the public from 6 PM to 9 PM. Earlier those days, from 3 PM to 6 PM, youth help finalize the setup and rehearse their roles—whether they're spooky guides, silent scarers, or part of the behind-the-scenes crew. They’re also trained in how to deliver safe scares, take breaks, and create a welcoming but creepy experience for all guests.

The Halloween event is completely free to attend and serves as a fundraiser for our Thanksgiving “Projects in a Bag” initiative. It’s one of the most beloved times of the year at Just One—a space where creativity, leadership, and fun collide in the most unforgettable way.

Volunteer: Transitions: Transitional Living Center (TLC)

Transitional Living Center (TLC): Transitional housing with support services for homeless women and their children in 15 apartments and one permanent housing unit, access to playgrounds and gardens. Services include on-site case management, support groups, and community classes and events. TLC is dedicated to helping homeless women with children create stability in their lives.

Volunteer Roles: (Commitment of 20 volunteer hours is required; does not have to be completed in one term)

Food Bank Day: Accompany the driver to the food bank, help load the food and then unload and store it at TLC. Food bank delivery happens every other Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 am. Helpful to have a food handler's license or be willing to obtain one; able to lift up to 25 pounds. Event Volunteering: We host one to three community events a month at TLC. Past events have consisted of BBQs, movie nights, arts and crafts, holiday celebrations. Having volunteers help us set up for those events and participate in them, meeting our community, could be rewarding for staff and volunteers. These events typically run in the evenings so the commitment would be a 2- hour time frame, usually between 3 to 7 pm. Lead a Class: Teach a skill or hobby such as sewing, knitting, how to raise your credit score or suggest a topic of your own! Clean Up Day: Volunteers can stop by any time between 10:00 AM and 4:00 pm and stay for any amount of time they choose. Tasks will include general landscaping, moving large shelves/small furniture, organizing our storage space, and basic cleaning. Some of these tasks will require using stairs, maneuvering corners, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Childcare: Provide childcare during Participant Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings, a participant voice and empowerment program. PAC members are Transitions participants and alums who use their voices and experiences to advise on issues affecting participants in Transitions’ programs, as well as identifying gaps in services and opportunities for improvement. PAC meetings are the last Wednesday of the month, with childcare needed from 12:15 - 2:15. Apartment Turn-Around: Help clean and ready vacated apartments so they are quickly available for new families who are waiting to move into TLC. Times vary depending on vacancies but let us know if you'd like to be added to a contact list when the need arises. Yard Work: Help maintain a warm and welcome home through cleaning, landscaping assistance, and moving large furniture.

Volunteer: Feast World Kitchen Volunteer

Feast World Kitchen is a downtown restaurant (3rd & Cedar) for Spokane's immigrant and former refugee community to share their culture through excellent international cuisine. Feast Collective elevates and empowers immigrants and former refugees as leaders. We use international cuisine as a platform for economic resilience, holistic growth, and culture-sharing.

We are a group of neighbors. Some are from Spokane, some are from around the world. We share a few convictions in common: one is that Spokane should welcome former refugees and immigrants, weaving them into the fabric of our civic life. Another is that food has a wonderful way of bringing people together and breaking down barriers. A third is simple: Spokane needs more great global cuisine! We're launching Feast World Kitchen: an incubator space to empower immigrant chefs. Join us.

Volunteer: Reading Buddies

Reading at grade level is an important progress indicator for student success! We are excited to engage our community in helping us meet that goal for every student. The Community Reading Buddies program will focus on students in Kindergarten-third grade who would benefit from support to be grade level readers. By having a positive reading experience with a caring adult, our students will keep making progress in their reading skills, develop a love of reading, and feel a sense of belonging to their school and community.

The schools will be provided with a reading cart, colored book containers, some books to get started, and a helpful handout to help guide Community Reading Buddies. The details of the program (schedule, number of reading mentors, etc.) will be determined by each school in conversation with their community partner and volunteer.

Please contact John Traynor to register: (509) 313-3632 or traynor@gonzaga.edu

Volunteer: Robotics Coach

Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity for next semester that is tons of fun and will also give you a chance to support youth STEM education? Consider joining our Girl Scout GoGetters FIRST LEGO League team as a coach or mentor!

FIRST LEGO League is a program proven to improve STEM education outcomes for students in grades K-8 using LEGO Education robotics kits and hands-on, project-based learning. The program was created by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in partnership with LEGO Education. We are excited to be bringing this opportunity to our Spokane Girl Scout Go Getter program, which provides the Girl Scout experience to girls from underrepresented backgrounds and title 1 schools free of charge, for the second season! Our aim with this engaging educational program is to encourage our girls to explore STEM concepts, education and careers by showing them that science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be fun, and that they already have what it takes to excel in these subjects.

In FIRST LEGO League, adult coaches and mentors are there to help guide and support youth, but the girls will be doing the work! Prior experience with LEGOs and robotics are welcome, but not required. We will provide basic FIRST LEGO League Coach training, and staff support to help guide the teams. Primary responsibilities of this role include guiding the team through the session plans provided with the season materials, asking the girls open questions that encourage critical and creative thinking, learning and helping the team learn the six FIRST core values, providing advice on project requirements, and helping to build wise time management and teamwork practices.

We have two teams that you may chose to volunteer with:

* FLL Explore- For Brownies in grades 2-3, the project requirements at this level are slightly less complex. The girls will build a team model based on the season theme and use scratch code in the LEGO SPIKE Essentials app to code one motorized part on that team model. At the end of the season, they will give a brief judged presentation of the model, explain the way that they incorporated and coded a motorized part, and describe how they used the FIRST Core Values throughout the season.

* FLL Challenge- For Juniors and Cadettes in grades 4-8, this team will have to complete a four part project! They will design, build and code a robot using the LEGO SPIKE Prime kit, devise a solution to a real-world problem related to the season theme and either build or draw a prototype of the solution for the Innovation Project, demonstrate their robot design and code by competing against other teams in the Robot Game, and provide a 15 minute presentation of all of the work that they did during the season to a panel of judges at the Regional Challenge Qualifier.

This community need will be updated periodically as more details are determined, closer to the start of the season in August. Currently, the minimum commitment for coaches and mentors is 2 hours per week for the FLL season, generally 12-14 weeks from mid-August to the first week of December, excluding holidays. Late starts will be welcome, just reach out and share your interest and scheduling needs. Meeting dates and times are TBD, but most meetings will occur on the same day of the week (M-TH) after school. Some weekend meetings may be necessary for team educational outings and extra practice, depending on the pace at which the teams complete project milestones. Season theme to be revealed next week!

This is a really unique program that is so much fun in addition to providing incredible learning and growth opportunities to participants, but we need help from volunteers like you to sustain and support it! If you would like more information, or are ready to volunteer to help our girls develop STEM confidence and SEL skills that will serve them throughout their lives, please reach out to ostrange@gsewni.org.

Be a role model and make an impact! We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to be a Girl Scout, and you can help make it possible!

Our GoGetter Program is a grant-funded outreach initiative aimed to provide the necessary means for girls from underrepresented areas and Title I schools to access the Girl Scout Leadership Experience by eliminating barriers and navigating obstacles such as cost, facilities and transportation.

Our Spokane GoGetter program currently consists of eight troops of girls in grades K-5, and one troop of girls in grades 6-12, each of which meets once weekly after school. We are seeking volunteers willing to commit to at least one shift (1.5 hours) per week. No prior experience is necessary to serve in this role; you will be paired with a trained Girl Scout staff member. The primary duties of this role include providing support to the troop leader following the provided weekly lesson plan, assisting girls with snack and instructions as needed, and providing a safe and inclusive place for girls to communicate, learn and grow. Volunteer: THRIVE International Volunteer

Tens of millions of people are on the move, seeking new opportunities and/ or fleeing violence, persecution, and natural disasters.  Those migrating need help establishing themselves materially, socially, and spiritually in new communities.  At the same time, fear and resentment are rising among those who are not migrating.  Increasingly, established community members around the world are resistant to newcomers, despite many clearly documented benefits that come with immigrants.

Thrive International specializes in educating, training, and empowering both immigrants and citizens to develop relationships with one another that are mutually transformative and enrich entire communities.  We help immigrants move “from surviving to thriving” through empowerment programs focused specifically on the needs and opportunities experienced by adolescents, women, and recognized community and faith leaders.  We help empower citizens in our community by providing educational programs, and opportunities to develop relationships through volunteer activities.

Volunteer: CCE: Campus Kitchens

Who We Are

The Campus Kitchen is a hunger relief program that focuses on food recovery, eliminating waste, and building community.  The program collects all of the leftover food from campus dining and utilizes student volunteers to repurpose that food into healthy meals that get delivered to low-income senior housing, after school programs, and shelters in the Spokane community. The Campus Kitchen is part of Gonzaga's Center for Community Engagement.

We prepare meals in our kitchen located in the Humanities Building and serve meals at The O’Malley Senior Center, House of Charity, and Logan Elementary, and Gonzaga Family Haven

We also have a garden on campus where we grow organic produce to supplement our meals when possible. Gardening shifts are usually available in the spring and fall.

This is a variable volunteer commitment opportunity.

Apply at www.arc-spokane.org/volunteer

The Arc's Community Center operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers may teach crafts, elementary music, math, reading, and drama to members of the center, interact with them socially and recreationally or accompany them on day trips in the community. Our goal is to create an environment of learning social skills for our members and in turn, our members help create stronger advocates in all our volunteers. We strongly encourage that everyone should come one day into our Center, Your life will be changed for the better being with our members.

When a volunteer enters our program, they are trained with an hour orientation on what to except and to have any questions answered to help them feel more comfortable in our center. Along with the orientation into our program, volunteers will undergo a background check through DSHS. Those are completed and paid for by The Arc of Spokane.

There aren't any requirements on how many hours volunteers put in and days to come in are very flexible to individual schedules.  We invite anyone interested in coming into our centers to join our team. Whether it's just for a special event, on occasional breaks or having a regular schedule. We will work with you and find a good fit for your skills and talents.

Volunteer: Social Media Intern for Non-Profit

ACL Spokane centers the power of Asians and Asian Americans to build a just, healthy, and thriving community for all. We envision a world of collective liberation where Asians and Asian Americans can live in a community of wellbeing, safety, and belonging. Our programs improve community health and wellness and increase civic engagement through community building, arts, and culture.

The Social Media Intern would assist the Program Manager for Health and Wellness to create a social media strategy around mental health advocacy/education and our health and wellness programs. This could mean the planning for social media content as well as potentially assist in development of content creation. The ideal intern would have an interest in improving the social media strategy of non-profits as well as an interest in mental health and assisting in the development of an interesting and engaging social media brand.

The intern may need to assist in-person from our downtown office but can also work from home.
