Brainwave Buddies is an art-based creative mentorship program that is designed to bring together students that identify as neurodiverse from both Gonzaga University and Yasuhara Middle School.  It aims to foster a sense of community amongst the students (grades 6-8) through creative-based curriculum that is adaptable to the unique needs of the participants. This program aims to provide students with the support and tools to promote self-advocacy for their own unique needs and strengths, both in and outside of the classroom. Our curriculum also aims to create confidence in post-secondary education and career exploration of students who identify as neurodivergent, through the lived experience of our mentors and student leaders. Mentors will attend weekly programming (Wednesdays 3:00-5:30 PM) at Yasuhara Middle School and a monthly lunch visit. Mentors will also be required to attend a weekly meeting with their student leaders and AmeriCorps to discuss the upcoming activity.

Curious about how communication can foster connections and transform conflicts? Northwest Mediation Center is recruiting ambassadors to learn conflict resolution skills and expand peaceful problem solving in our community. This free, 90 minute training is an overview of NMC’s work in dispute resolution and an invitation to community members to join us as ambassadors of productive approaches to conflict in everyday situations. 

Beginning in October, we will be gathering twice a month for 90 minutes to discuss concrete skills and build a shared understanding of nonviolent communication, the work NMC does as a community mediation center, and how we can, as individuals and community members, can build healthier communities. These conversations will deepen our shared understanding of and commitment to peaceful problem solving in everyday conflicts beyond the mediation room. This training and subsequent discussions are intended to train volunteer ambassadors for outreach events in Spring 2026. 

Initial training: 90 minutes (in person or virtual options)

Bimonthly ambassador gatherings: 90 minutes, virtual

Pet Visitation Program (CH/HF/SH/SJ)

Experience the benefit a dog visit brings to the health and well-being of hospitalized patients through this special program. Dogs and their handlers must be certified with Pet Partners. Don't have a dog? Volunteers at the ministries in Spokane are needed as escorts during hospital visits too! Shifts: Varies, 1.5-hour shifts, flexible scheduling. Status: OPEN

You can help hungry people in our community. Please join other volunteers to help sort and pack produce, food drive or bulk food items in preparation for distribution to our emergency food partners. Second Harvest's volunteers provide a wide range of valuable services that help feed 50,000 hungry people each week in the Inland Northwest. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday - Friday from as early as 9am to as late as 6:30pm.

We are seeking volunteers for weekly virtual visits with seniors. Our virtual visit program matches teams 2-3 young adult college students with older adults for weekly virtual video visits. Many of these older adults have been suffering from isolation, and you could really brighten their days just by speaking with them. 

Students on our virtual visits initially volunteer one hour per week, and each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. Students select the times that work for their schedule, and are matched with older adults for calls based on the times when they're available. They then have regular, weekly appointments for their visits. We expect students to volunteer for at least 16 weeks, so that they can develop friendships with the senior they're matched with. 

We provide training (mandatory) to all the students in our program about the best ways to interact with the older adults on our video calls, as well as additional regular support throughout their service. Since the visits are virtual, your students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient, and a better use of their time, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. This program is free for seniors and students across the country. Volunteering does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new virtual visits starting all the time. 

Students wishing for opportunities to support our cause who don't want to participate in the virtual visits or who want to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with other volunteering options, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, outreach, or more. A drive-through food distribution that brings fresh groceries straight to neighborhoods in need. Volunteers help unload the truck, pack food into boxes or bags, and load them directly into waiting vehicles. Providing up to 250 families with food. You will be matched with one of the employees in our job-training program. You will come to the GN office for one hour each week to meet with him/her. During this time you will serve as a conversation partner to help practice English. You may also be asked to help him/her practice specific workplace English vocabulary or tutor on ESL homework. We will provide a topic list to help guide your conversation times.

The goal of this volunteer program is twofold: First, we want each of our employees to leave their time with GN having a better grasp of English. This will help them in all areas of their life, and will especially help them as they search for full-time work. Second, we want to establish relationship/community between former-refugees and other members of the Spokane community. The relationship you build with your conversation partner will teach both of you and break down barriers preventing Spokane from being a more integrated community.

What is STAR?

The mission of STAR (Storytelling, Teaching Artists, Arts Integration, and Resilience) is to provide creative education through culturally responsive frameworks, with access to the arts and technology for 3rd through 5th graders at Holmes and Garfield elementary schools. STAR creates a safe, consistent learning space with Lead Teachers and volunteers who cultivate trust, get to know participants' passions and interests, foster collaborative friendships, set the culture, and provide social-emotional learning tools that strengthen wellbeing beyond the classroom. STAR features professional Teaching Artists, designers, and innovators who guide students through projects that strengthen artistic skills, foster problem-solving, and introduce new mediums for creative expression.

STAR students love their volunteer mentors. If you enjoy spending time with 3rd-5th graders, they want to meet you! Mentors receive training from Spark Central to help encourage and develop STAR students’ creativity and build positive, playful relationships with them. Expertise in visual arts, performing arts, entrepreneurship, and other subjects explored in the program are not required - all you need is a desire to share yourself with these cool kids!

A year of STAR is organized into three units that engage students in investigative performance arts, technology and entrepreneurship, and large-scale visual art projects. In each project, Lead Teachers, Teaching Artists, and volunteer mentors guide and support students in identifying playful, impassioned ideas and developing them into powerful, tangible expressions of student voice.

Fall project: Atmosphere. Atmosphere gives artists the ability to tell stories with their breath. During this module, artists will create art with their breath and bodies as they dance, act, sing, and play.

Winter project: Satellite. It takes a lot of creatives, scientists, and innovators to create a satellite. For Satellite, artists will use technology to create art through animation, photography, film, science and entrepreneurship.

Spring project: Constellation. All the connections that make artists stronger. During Constellation, artists will gravitate toward tactile art that builds bridges between the previous units. The understanding of motion makes our paintings stronger. Thinking in 3D makes us better sculptors. Artists can expect to make art bigger and better than ever, on and off the canvas.

Time commitment:
Mentors are expected at one school (either Garfield or Holmes) from 3-5 PM for at least one day each week. This program runs Tue-Fri from October to June. We are hoping to find volunteers who are available for the entire school year, but if you are only available for one unit, that is alright, too.

R.I.S.E. Northwest is looking for volunteers to mentor school aged children and teens who have lost their parent! Help children and teens embark on their grieving and healing journey. BE THEIR CHAMPION! 

Camp Cope is our 16-week program that meets every other Monday from 6:30-7:30pm at Sumit U, 1003 E. Trent Ave.

The goal of Camp Cope is to make connections, build resiliency, and foster healthy coping skills. Trained facilitators lead structured peer groups and encourage group members to express the many feelings that are a part of the grieving process. All activities, selected by a team of Child Life Specialists, follow a theme with age-appropriate objectives, such as recreation, art, expression, and communication, in order to decrease isolation, increase self-confidence, and build resiliency.

Women & Children’s Free Restaurant & Community Kitchen serves women and children who need food assistance and community support. Since 1988, we have provided healthy chef-made meals, fresh groceries, and shelf-stable products to women, seniors, teens, and children.

Please consider joining our team as a kitchen assistant, dishwasher, or meal packager. There are no specific skills needed and you will receive excellent training as you work alongside our kitchen professionals. A Washington State Food Worker card is required.

Women & Children’s Free Restaurant & Community Kitchen serves women and children who need food assistance and community support. Since 1988, we have provided healthy chef-made meals, fresh groceries, and shelf-stable products to women, seniors, teens, and children.

Become a member of our food inventory team! Along with other volunteers, you will help stock, organize, bag and box perishable and pantry foods. Have a passion for education & mentoring at-risk students? Need class credit hours and extra cash for books?

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center is looking for college volunteers with experience in education, math, or English to become after-school tutors! Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with K-6th grade Title I Elementary students offering remedial services in Math, English, reading, and language arts. This is a great opportunity for education majors looking to create and develop Student Learning Plans (SLPs) and gain valuable experience working in an Elementary classroom. This opportunity is also targeted for students who have a passion for youth empowerment & mentoring at-risk children.

Tutors, for each tutoring period successfully completed, you earn a $300 stipend to cover traveling expenses and provide an incentive for consistent attendance (potential of earning up to $900 for the academic school year). College credit hours are also available for relevant and appropriate courses.

Volunteer hours are flexible. 

The Salvation Army of Spokane Food Bank assists more than 1,500 people per month. This is a client choice program, meaning that each client that comes through our doors gets to “shop” for their own food with dignity. This process relies on volunteers to assist clients and keep the shelves stocked with a variety of food choices.

Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday (with the exception of holidays).  
Once applications are received and processed and orientation is completed, volunteers manage their own hours Monday through Friday, 8:30am through 5:00pm.

If you’re looking for a fun way to help shelter dogs and/or get your fitness steps in - look no further! Come volunteer at our shelter to walk dogs! Exercise and time socializing with people is so important for our canine critters that you’d be doing an amazing service for our dogs. Please note, some of our fur babies haven’t been taught leash etiquette and may be more of a workout than others. Our shelter staff and experienced volunteers will show you the ropes and help you select the dogs right for your comfort level. (We also have a Doggie Day Out Program that lets you take a dog our for a hike in the woods, a stroll in the park (not a dog park), or even a car buddy while you run errands.) Your time with the dog outside of the shelter helps us learn more about them so we can help find the best adoption match.

We depend on the kindness, love and homes of our foster parents to help us save hundreds of lives every year.  Members of our foster care program open up their homes for shelter animals.  They care for kittens or puppies until they are old enough for adoption, animals with illnesses and injuries until they are healed, and animals who need socialization or those who are not thriving in the shelter environment.  The time commitment varies upon the needs of the foster pet, but generally is between 2 weeks and 3 months. 

Fostering is a flexible, fun and rewarding volunteer experience, and requires a special person- able to invest themselves into the lives of foster pets, and let them go knowing they’ve helped save a life.  We provide all supplies foster parents need, from food and bedding to medication. While it is best to have some knowledge about animal behavior and health, we always try to match foster parents with animals whose needs are within your ability level, and we provide ongoing help and support throughout your foster experience. 

Our adoptable cats reside at all three local PetSmarts, all three local PetCos and the Kitty Cantina plus we often bring dogs or puppies to these adoption centers.  These animals get scooped up by adopters and go off to start their new lives. We found homes for over 4,000 cats and dogs last year! At PetSmart and Petco, store volunteers keep the adoption areas clean and tidy, socialize the kitties, and help with adoptions.

Do you love animals and are addicted to social media?  Why not combine these loves?  Come down and make the goofiest video of some of our pups or take the most amazing photos of our adorable kitties and make them go viral.  Help us reach people that we couldn’t otherwise and make a difference in the lives of homeless animals!

As the population ages, many seniors need support but don't have family close by or other ways to get around, especially when it comes to medical appointments. Jewish Family Services transportation volunteers will be contacted as opportunities arise; the volunteer may accept or decline depending on their availability. Volunteers must be 18+ years old, have use of a car, and have a valid driver's license. A basic background check is required before providing transportation assistance; SAJFS will pay for this. Women’s Hearth: The Women's Hearth is a safe, welcoming community that promotes growth and well-being in body, mind, and spirit for women of diverse backgrounds. The Hearth fosters nurturing relationships, encourages self-determination, and advocates for change in systems that oppress women. At Just One, our after-school program is more than just a place to hang out—it’s a dynamic, welcoming space where youth ages 10 and older can explore their creativity, connect with mentors, build leadership skills, and feel part of a positive community.

The program runs Monday through Friday, from 3 PM to 6 PM, during designated program months like March April May. Youth can drop in as their schedule allows—no need to attend every day.

Our field trips are a huge hit—whether we're visiting movies, Getair, resturants, thrift shops for budgeting lessons, or local parks for outdoor fun, we aim to expose youth to enriching experiences beyond their neighborhood.

Plus, we regularly invite in college interns, guest speakers, and community partners to lead special workshops and activities.

The program is free, but families must create a parent account and register each youth for safety and communication purposes.

Once registered, youth are welcome to join us any day that fits their schedule—we’re a walk-in-friendly program, and there’s no requirement for daily attendance.

Our after-school program provides more than just activities—it’s a place where youth feel safe, seen, and supported. Many of the youth we serve are navigating tough circumstances, and we’re here to offer consistency, encouragement, and meaningful opportunities to grow.

Transitional Living Center (TLC): Transitional housing with support services for homeless women and their children in 15 apartments and one permanent housing unit, access to playgrounds and gardens. Miryam’s House: Transitional housing program where women experiencing homelessness are encouraged down the path to recovery and stability through case management and life-skills education. The Home Yard Cottages are a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) project, completed in fall 2018, providing supportive services to help residents maintain stability and meet goals. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is the term that Housing and Urban Development (HUD) uses to describe housing provided to persons who have a disability, are low-income, and have been homeless. The Home Yard Cottages include 24 homes, fifteen of which are net-zero energy and fitted with solar panels. Volunteer activities take place in the community room or outdoors.

Shalom Ministries is a not-for-profit ministry dedicated to providing wholesome meals and other services to the poor and homeless people within our community.  We are committed to a system of excellence as we work with guests, team members, volunteers and the people we serve in a process that begins through the spirit of cooperation. Shalom believes that poverty and homelessness are but mere symptoms of deeper problems within an individual and the community at large. Feast World Kitchen is a downtown restaurant (3rd & Cedar) for Spokane's immigrant and former refugee community to share their culture through excellent international cuisine. Feast Collective elevates and empowers immigrants and former refugees as leaders. We use international cuisine as a platform for economic resilience, holistic growth, and culture-sharing.

We are a group of neighbors. Some are from Spokane, some are from around the world. We share a few convictions in common: one is that Spokane should welcome former refugees and immigrants, weaving them into the fabric of our civic life. A family oriented residential facility for non-delinquent, dependent children. Duplicates a traditional middle-class, family atmosphere emphasizing school and community involvement through high school graduation. Children are accepted at age 5-14 and may remain through high school graduation. No child is refused because a parent or relative is unable to pay fee.

Be a Hutton Settlement volunteer tutor and assist children in their academic and social development! Build quality relationships while being a volunteer tutor for a child. All volunteers must meet certain qualifications and will undergo background checks. Volunteer tutors typically start at the beginning of a school year, must commit for the entire term and are matched to the individual needs of available children.

Open Doors is a Family Day Emergency Shelter. For the first time in Spokane's history, there is now be a shelter available for displaced families who need a warm shelter, a welcoming smile and some help to find sustainable housing. We assess families, connect them to local resources, and provide food, supplies, showers, computer and laundry access between 7:30 am-7:30 pm. The Family Promise Emergency Shelter is located on 2002 E. Mission Avenue.

Reading at grade level is an important progress indicator for student success! We are excited to engage our community in helping us meet that goal for every student. The Community Reading Buddies program will focus on students in Kindergarten-third grade who would benefit from support to be grade level readers. By having a positive reading experience with a caring adult, our students will keep making progress in their reading skills, develop a love of reading, and feel a sense of belonging to their school and community.

The schools will be provided with a reading cart, colored book containers, some books to get started, and a helpful handout to help guide Community Reading Buddies. The details of the program (schedule, number of reading mentors, etc.) will be determined by each school in conversation with their community partner and volunteer.

Tech Interns will work with the Volunteer Associate and other IT Volunteers to provide “office hours” for the community where they share their technology expertise and educate patrons on how to use the technology accessible at Spark Central. These interns will also design systems and guides to make our technology more accessible to the public and may design tech-based programming for various age groups. The Marketing Intern to support our outreach and marketing to the West Central neighborhood and the broader Spokane community, including networking, neighborhood engagement, literature distribution, social media, pop-up neighborhood programs, and more. Part of each intern’s schedule will be tailored to your specific talents and area of study.

While Spokane Public Schools is offering distance learning this fall, Spark Central will be offering West Central students enrolled in our Level Up program the opportunity to do their school work in our space for part of the school day. As a volunteer for this Educational Support time, you will help us create a safe, stable, and healthy learning environment for students. Whether they are experiencing technical issues with their schoolwork, or need a bit of warmth and support to get through these isolating and challenging times, your assistance will make a difference in their day. You don’t need to be an expert in school subjects or education to be a great fit for this role!

We help to start, expand, and support community gardens throughout Spokane and there is always a garden in need of additional helping hands. 

As community needs increase in difficult times, our participant network expands. With it, the need for transportation to and from programs is also increasing. We are currently looking for volunteer drivers who can lead transportation for our Afghan Women Support Group on Mondays, Gardening & Harvesting on Wednesdays, and Refugee Elder Programs on Fridays.

Our GoGetter Program is a grant-funded outreach initiative aimed to provide the necessary means for girls from underrepresented areas and Title I schools to access the Girl Scout Leadership Experience by eliminating barriers and navigating obstacles such as cost, facilities and transportation.

Our Spokane GoGetter program currently consists of eight troops of girls in grades K-5, and one troop of girls in grades 6-12, each of which meets once weekly after school. We are seeking volunteers willing to commit to at least one shift (1.5 hours) per week. No prior experience is necessary to serve in this role; you will be paired with a trained Girl Scout staff member. The primary duties of this role include providing support to the troop leader following the provided weekly lesson plan, assisting girls with snack and instructions as needed, and providing a safe and inclusive place for girls to communicate, learn and grow. World Relief Spokane is a Christian non-profit organization welcoming refugees and immigrants.  Our services include: initial and extended case management, economic empowerment services, cultural adaptation, and providing a warm welcome as we help our new friends find services and make Spokane home.

Our work depends heavily on volunteer support, both through long term volunteers (3-6 months+) and interns.

Volunteer Program Manager: Tamara Clausnitzer

The Campus Kitchen is a hunger relief program that focuses on food recovery, eliminating waste, and building community.  The program collects all of the leftover food from campus dining and utilizes student volunteers to repurpose that food into healthy meals that get delivered to low-income senior housing, after school programs, and shelters in the Spokane community. The Campus Kitchen is part of Gonzaga's Center for Community Engagement. 

We prepare meals in our kitchen located in the Humanities Building and serve meals at The O’Malley Senior Center, House of Charity, and Logan Elementary, and Gonzaga Family Haven 

We also have a garden on campus where we grow organic produce to supplement our meals when possible. Gardening shifts are usually available in the spring and fall.

The Arc's Community Center operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers may teach crafts, elementary music, math, reading, and drama to members of the center, interact with them socially and recreationally or accompany them on day trips in the community. Our goal is to create an environment of learning social skills for our members and in turn, our members help create stronger advocates in all our volunteers. We strongly encourage that everyone should come one day into our Center, Your life will be changed for the better being with our members.

When a volunteer enters our program, they are trained with an hour orientation on what to except and to have any questions answered to help them feel more comfortable in our center. Along with the orientation into our program, volunteers will undergo a background check through DSHS. Those are completed and paid for by The Arc of Spokane.

There aren't any requirements on how many hours volunteers put in and days to come in are very flexible to individual schedules.  We invite anyone interested in coming into our centers to join our team. Whether it's just for a special event, on occasional breaks or having a regular schedule. We will work with you and find a good fit for your skills and talents.

Boba Breaks is our informal college-based event where we visit campus for 1-2 hours and promote conversation around mental health with simple yet meaningful prompts and questions. 

For the 2024-2025 academic year, we will be visiting WSU campus in Spokane in their Medicine Building on the second floor Center for the people every second Wednesday around the lunch hour (11:30-1:30pm, although volunteers may need to help before and after). We will be asking that volunteers assist with set up and clean up and serving boba. Depending on the student's background, volunteer students could potentially assist with conversation and aiding participants in the prompts. This may require some conversation and informal training beforehand.

The Social Media Intern would assist the Program Manager for Health and Wellness to create a social media strategy around mental health advocacy/education and our health and wellness programs. This could mean the planning for social media content as well as potentially assist in development of content creation. The ideal intern would have an interest in improving the social media strategy of non-profits as well as an interest in mental health and assisting in the development of an interesting and engaging social media brand.

The intern may need to assist in-person from our downtown office but can also work from home.

"Boba" Buddies is our Youth Program where Asian/Asian American students K-12 can join us for programming once a month.  The Boba Buddies program is run under our Health and Wellness program in an effort to build protective factors for young Asian and Asian American kids as part of our mental health programs. These protective factors include community and cultural identity building. We hope that Asian/Asian American kids will develop these protective factors so that they are less likely to have mental health issues as they get older. The program will include directed activities and games and a communal space for Asian/Asian American kids and their parents to hang out. We will provide after school snacks and some months will have special guests!

Volunteers will be asked to assist with crafts, set up/clean up, dispensing of boba and monitoring snacks. We tend to bring in families with young children and so assisting with little kids is very likely.

Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels Prepares and distributes close to 4700 meals each week, and runs an average of 50 meal routes Monday through Friday across the entire 1800 square miles of the County of Spokane. Ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens have a nutritious meal and a friendly visit, for many of our clients the volunteer delivering their meal is the only person they will see all day. 

We are urgently seeking regular and substitute volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound elderly persons in your Spokane neighborhood. Volunteers pick up the meals from any one of various sites throughout the City of Spokane and Spokane County around 11:00AM. It takes approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours to deliver a route of 10 to 15 stops. GSCMOW works closely with new volunteers to accommodate a schedule and area that works best for them.

 The area currently with the most critical need for drivers is the north and central areas of the City of Spokane, however due to the growing senior population, there is always an ongoing need for volunteers in all of our service areas throughout Spokane County.  The commitment is small but the rewards are immense. People who are experiencing financial insecurity often have to choose between paying rent and buying groceries. Sometimes, they run out of food assistance (SNAP EBT) and food at the same time. With the high cost of food, it's important for the community to step in and help avoid hunger.

Spokane Helpers Network provides free emergency Meal Kits. Each kit contains the contents of a meal that feeds four. Every kit includes non-perishable protein (e.g., canned chicken), at least one carbohydrate (e.g., noodles, biscuit mix), a canned vegetable, and a canned fruit. When there are children in the home, we also try to include healthy snacks.

We are seeking partners who can collect non-perishable food and assemble Meal Kits (in plastic grocery store bags).

Our volunteer delivery drivers will make sure that the Meal Kits are distributed to hungry households in Airway Heights, Spokane, Mead, and Spokane Valley.

Any number of Meal Kits would be helpful.

Spokane Helpers Network provides free Hygiene Kits for men, women and children.Each kit contains basics such as toothpaste/toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, soap, and razor.

We are seeking partners who can collect hygiene items and assemble Hygiene Kits (in gallon plastic bags).

Any number of kits would be helpful.

Our members have a heart for struggling people who are experiencing temporary financial challenges. They volunteer their time; they donate items for distribute to low-income households; they make financial donations. 

Many of our volunteers donate new items needed for Meal Kits (non-perishable food) and/or for Hygiene Kits (toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant).

Some volunteers help assemble Meal Kits and Hygiene Kits.

Other volunteers deliver free Emergency Meal Kits, as well as Hygiene Kits, to households in Airway Heights, Spokane, Mead, and Spokane Valley.

And, still others, help with behind-the-scenes admin tasks.

Lunch Bunch:  Be a positive connection for elementary students during lunchtime.  The lunch bunch is for a small group of students who'd rather stay inside at recess to play board games and build positive connections with adults.  Volunteer once a week or multiple days each week from 11am-1pm, Monday-Friday.

 Students may serve in YFC's Center, which is open from about 2:00-6:00 Monday through Thursday. Service will include spending time with the kids who come in, playing sports, board games, video games, etc. Most importantly, fostering relationships and loving on the kids at the center. Our kiddos are ages 11-19. Students are encouraged to help with homework and tutors are greatly needed. There are longer term volunteer opportunities also available such as donor programming and outreach.
