Transitional Living Center (TLC): Transitional housing with support services for homeless women and their children in 15 apartments and one permanent housing unit, access to playgrounds and gardens. Miryam’s House: Transitional housing program where women experiencing homelessness are encouraged down the path to recovery and stability through case management and life-skills education. The Home Yard Cottages are a Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) project, completed in fall 2018, providing supportive services to help residents maintain stability and meet goals. Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is the term that Housing and Urban Development (HUD) uses to describe housing provided to persons who have a disability, are low-income, and have been homeless. The Home Yard Cottages include 24 homes, fifteen of which are net-zero energy and fitted with solar panels. Volunteer activities take place in the community room or outdoors.

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane is welcoming volunteers to our build sites in Spokane Valley, and the City of Spokane.  As a volunteer, you and others will spend the day using sustainable and responsible practices to build homes that last. The home building process can include framing, drywall, insulation, siding, floor installation, painting, and more. No prior experience is necessary, and people of all abilities are encouraged to participate. These houses can be new construction or rehabilitation  projects. We are building incredibly energy-efficient homes for families in need of a safe and affordable place to call home. All houses Habitat for Humanity-Spokane builds are sold to qualified low-income families through Habitat Homeownership Program.  Please dress in clothes you can work in (shorts are okay), dressed for the weather, layers are best. Wear closed-toed shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Every shift starts with a brief Habitat introduction, safety orientation, and description of work assignments. All volunteers work under the instruction of the Habitat site Construction Supervisor.

Volunteer shifts are Wednesday to Saturday, morning shifts are from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. and afternoon shifts are from 12:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. You select the date and shift.

The Habitat Store serves our work of building strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. The Habitat Store is a donation-based home improvement and goods store. One hundred percent of proceeds from donations of new and gently used items help fund our mission. The store depends on enthusiastic volunteers for everything from bringing in donated items to helping us sort donations in our warehouse to arranging merchandise. Whether volunteers prefer interacting with the public or working behind the scenes, we have a space for everyone!

A family oriented residential facility for non-delinquent, dependent children. Duplicates a traditional middle-class, family atmosphere emphasizing school and community involvement through high school graduation. Children are accepted at age 5-14 and may remain through high school graduation. No child is refused because a parent or relative is unable to pay fee.

Be a Hutton Settlement volunteer tutor and assist children in their academic and social development! Build quality relationships while being a volunteer tutor for a child. Open Doors is a Family Day Emergency Shelter. For the first time in Spokane's history, there is now be a shelter available for displaced families who need a warm shelter, a welcoming smile and some help to find sustainable housing. We assess families, connect them to local resources, and provide food, supplies, showers, computer and laundry access between 7:30 am-7:30 pm. Reading at grade level is an important progress indicator for student success! We are excited to engage our community in helping us meet that goal for every student. The Community Reading Buddies program will focus on students in Kindergarten-third grade who would benefit from support to be grade level readers. By having a positive reading experience with a caring adult, our students will keep making progress in their reading skills, develop a love of reading, and feel a sense of belonging to their school and community.

The schools will be provided with a reading cart, colored book containers, some books to get started, and a helpful handout to help guide Community Reading Buddies. The details of the program (schedule, number of reading mentors, etc.) will be determined by each school in conversation with their community partner and volunteer.

Catholic Charities affirms the dignity of every person, partnering with parishes and the greater community to serve and advocate for those who are vulnerable, bringing stability and hope to people throughout eastern Washington. The O'Malley apartments provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals who are 62+ and/or disabled. The ZVC team will play Bunko with residents during the meal.

Tech Interns will work with the Volunteer Associate and other IT Volunteers to provide “office hours” for the community where they share their technology expertise and educate patrons on how to use the technology accessible at Spark Central. These interns will also design systems and guides to make our technology more accessible to the public and may design tech-based programming for various age groups. The Marketing Intern to support our outreach and marketing to the West Central neighborhood and the broader Spokane community, including networking, neighborhood engagement, literature distribution, social media, pop-up neighborhood programs, and more. Part of each intern’s schedule will be tailored to your specific talents and area of study.

As a volunteer for this Educational Support time, you will help us create a safe, stable, and healthy learning environment for students. Whether they are experiencing technical issues with their schoolwork, or need a bit of warmth and support to get through these isolating and challenging times, your assistance will make a difference in their day. You don’t need to be an expert in school subjects or education to be a great fit for this role!

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center is looking for college volunteers with experience in education, math, or English to become after-school tutors! Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with K-6th grade Title I Elementary students offering remedial services in Math, English, reading, and language arts. This is a great opportunity for education majors looking to create and develop Student Learning Plans (SLPs) and gain valuable experience working in an Elementary classroom. This opportunity is also targeted for students who have a passion for youth empowerment & mentoring at-risk children.

Tutors, for each tutoring period successfully completed, you earn a $300 stipend to cover traveling expenses and provide an incentive for consistent attendance (potential of earning up to $900 for the academic school year). College credit hours are also available for relevant and appropriate courses.

In The Kitchen, we’re giving people the tools to take their health into their own hands. We’re taking our mission to fight hunger a step further and investing in long-term health through nutrition education and hands-on cooking lessons.

The Kitchen empowers families to reduce or eliminate the foods that contribute to obesity and nutrition-related health conditions. Children and adults learn to make healthy yet economical food choices, helping them move out of poverty. 

Volunteering in The Kitchen can look like: setting up, food prep, passing out ingredients, answering questions, connecting with clients and helping with clean up.

We help to start, expand, and support community gardens throughout Spokane and there is always a garden in need of additional helping hands. 

As community needs increase in difficult times, our participant network expands. With it, the need for transportation to and from programs is also increasing. Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity for next semester that is tons of fun and will also give you a chance to support youth STEM education? Consider joining our Girl Scout GoGetters FIRST LEGO League team as a coach or mentor! 

FIRST LEGO League is a program proven to improve STEM education outcomes for students in grades K-8 using LEGO Education robotics kits and hands-on, project-based learning. The program was created by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in partnership with LEGO Education. We are excited to be bringing this opportunity to our Spokane Girl Scout Go Getter program, which provides the Girl Scout experience to girls from underrepresented backgrounds and title 1 schools free of charge, for the second season! Our aim with this engaging educational program is to encourage our girls to explore STEM concepts, education and careers by showing them that science, technology, engineering and mathematics can be fun, and that they already have what it takes to excel in these subjects.

In FIRST LEGO League, adult coaches and mentors are there to help guide and support youth, but the girls will be doing the work! Prior experience with LEGOs and robotics are welcome, but not required. We will provide basic FIRST LEGO League Coach training, and staff support to help guide the teams. Primary responsibilities of this role include guiding the team through the session plans provided with the season materials, asking the girls open questions that encourage critical and creative thinking, learning and helping the team learn the six FIRST core values, providing advice on project requirements, and helping to build wise time management and teamwork practices.

We have two teams that you may chose to volunteer with:

* FLL Explore- For Brownies in grades 2-3, the project requirements at this level are slightly less complex. The girls will build a team model based on the season theme and use scratch code in the LEGO SPIKE Essentials app to code one motorized part on that team model. At the end of the season, they will give a brief judged presentation of the model, explain the way that they incorporated and coded a motorized part, and describe how they used the FIRST Core Values throughout the season.

* FLL Challenge- For Juniors and Cadettes in grades 4-8, this team will have to complete a four part project! They will design, build and code a robot using the LEGO SPIKE Prime kit, devise a solution to a real-world problem related to the season theme and either build or draw a prototype of the solution for the Innovation Project, demonstrate their robot design and code by competing against other teams in the Robot Game, and provide a 15 minute presentation of all of the work that they did during the season to a panel of judges at the Regional Challenge Qualifier.

This community need will be updated periodically as more details are determined, closer to the start of the season in August. Currently, the minimum commitment for coaches and mentors is 2 hours per week for the FLL season, generally 12-14 weeks from mid-August to the first week of December, excluding holidays. Late starts will be welcome, just reach out and share your interest and scheduling needs. Meeting dates and times are TBD, but most meetings will occur on the same day of the week (M-TH) after school. Some weekend meetings may be necessary for team educational outings and extra practice, depending on the pace at which the teams complete project milestones. Season theme to be revealed next week!

Our GoGetter Program is a grant-funded outreach initiative aimed to provide the necessary means for girls from underrepresented areas and Title I schools to access the Girl Scout Leadership Experience by eliminating barriers and navigating obstacles such as cost, facilities and transportation.

Our Spokane GoGetter program currently consists of eight troops of girls in grades K-5, and one troop of girls in grades 6-12, each of which meets once weekly after school. We are seeking volunteers willing to commit to at least one shift (1.5 hours) per week. No prior experience is necessary to serve in this role; you will be paired with a trained Girl Scout staff member. The primary duties of this role include providing support to the troop leader following the provided weekly lesson plan, assisting girls with snack and instructions as needed, and providing a safe and inclusive place for girls to communicate, learn and grow. The Campus Kitchen is a hunger relief program that focuses on food recovery, eliminating waste, and building community.  The program collects all of the leftover food from campus dining and utilizes student volunteers to repurpose that food into healthy meals that get delivered to low-income senior housing, after school programs, and shelters in the Spokane community. The Campus Kitchen is part of Gonzaga's Center for Community Engagement. 

We prepare meals in our kitchen located in the Humanities Building and serve meals at The O’Malley Senior Center, House of Charity, and Logan Elementary, and Gonzaga Family Haven 

We also have a garden on campus where we grow organic produce to supplement our meals when possible. Gardening shifts are usually available in the spring and fall.

The Salvation Army of Spokane Food Bank assists more than 1,500 people per month. This is a client choice program, meaning that each client that comes through our doors gets to “shop” for their own food with dignity. This process relies on volunteers to assist clients and keep the shelves stocked with a variety of food choices.

Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday (with the exception of holidays).

Kitchen Volunteers help prepare snacks and meals for children, volunteers, and staff.  Snacks and meals may serve up to 24 children and adults.  Kitchen Volunteers follow a set menu but are allowed flexibility and creativity as they become more comfortable in their position.  *4-hour weekly shifts, mornings or afternoons.

Reception Volunteers are the first point of contact between Vanessa Behan and the community.  Reception Volunteers assist families with the Diaper and Formula program, Community Sharing Room, and receiving donations.

Play with Children ages birth to age 12 while parents or guardians attend to court business on the Spokane County Courthouse Campus.  Childcare Volunteers get to be silly, share hugs and words of encouragement, and have fun!  This site is perfect for students because it tends not to be a busy as our main location, so students will probably have time to do homework.  *Regular shift required:  Thursdays, 1pm-5pm, or Fridays, 8am-1pm OR 1pm-5pm.  Must be at least 18 years old.

The Arc's Community Center operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers may teach crafts, elementary music, math, reading, and drama to members of the center, interact with them socially and recreationally or accompany them on day trips in the community. Our goal is to create an environment of learning social skills for our members and in turn, our members help create stronger advocates in all our volunteers. We strongly encourage that everyone should come one day into our Center, Your life will be changed for the better being with our members.

When a volunteer enters our program, they are trained with an hour orientation on what to except and to have any questions answered to help them feel more comfortable in our center. Along with the orientation into our program, volunteers will undergo a background check through DSHS. Those are completed and paid for by The Arc of Spokane.

There aren't any requirements on how many hours volunteers put in and days to come in are very flexible to individual schedules.  We invite anyone interested in coming into our centers to join our team. "Boba" Buddies is our Youth Program where Asian/Asian American students K-12 can join us for programming once a month.  The Boba Buddies program is run under our Health and Wellness program in an effort to build protective factors for young Asian and Asian American kids as part of our mental health programs. These protective factors include community and cultural identity building. We hope that Asian/Asian American kids will develop these protective factors so that they are less likely to have mental health issues as they get older. The program will include directed activities and games and a communal space for Asian/Asian American kids and their parents to hang out. We will provide after school snacks and some months will have special guests!

Volunteers will be asked to assist with crafts, set up/clean up, dispensing of boba and monitoring snacks. We tend to bring in families with young children and so assisting with little kids is very likely.

Our adoptable cats reside at all three local PetSmarts, all three local PetCos and the Kitty Cantina plus we often bring dogs or puppies to these adoption centers.  These animals get scooped up by adopters and go off to start their new lives. We found homes for over 4,000 cats and dogs last year! At PetSmart and Petco, store volunteers keep the adoption areas clean and tidy, socialize the kitties, and help with adoptions.

We depend on the kindness, love and homes of our foster parents to help us save hundreds of lives every year.  Members of our foster care program open up their homes for shelter animals.  They care for kittens or puppies until they are old enough for adoption, animals with illnesses and injuries until they are healed, and animals who need socialization or those who are not thriving in the shelter environment.  The time commitment varies upon the needs of the foster pet, but generally is between 2 weeks and 3 months. 

Fostering is a flexible, fun and rewarding volunteer experience, and requires a special person- able to invest themselves into the lives of foster pets, and let them go knowing they’ve helped save a life.  We provide all supplies foster parents need, from food and bedding to medication. While it is best to have some knowledge about animal behavior and health, we always try to match foster parents with animals whose needs are within your ability level, and we provide ongoing help and support throughout your foster experience. 

If you’re looking for a fun way to help shelter dogs and/or get your fitness steps in - look no further! Come volunteer at our shelter to walk dogs! Exercise and time socializing with people is so important for our canine critters that you’d be doing an amazing service for our dogs. Please note, some of our fur babies haven’t been taught leash etiquette and may be more of a workout than others. Our shelter staff and experienced volunteers will show you the ropes and help you select the dogs right for your comfort level. (We also have a Doggie Day Out Program that lets you take a dog our for a hike in the woods, a stroll in the park (not a dog park), or even a car buddy while you run errands.) Your time with the dog outside of the shelter helps us learn more about them so we can help find the best adoption match.

Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels Prepares and distributes close to 4700 meals each week, and runs an average of 50 meal routes Monday through Friday across the entire 1800 square miles of the County of Spokane. Ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens have a nutritious meal and a friendly visit, for many of our clients the volunteer delivering their meal is the only person they will see all day. 

We are urgently seeking regular and substitute volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound elderly persons in your Spokane neighborhood. Volunteers pick up the meals from any one of various sites throughout the City of Spokane and Spokane County around 11:00AM. It takes approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours to deliver a route of 10 to 15 stops. GSCMOW works closely with new volunteers to accommodate a schedule and area that works best for them.

 The area currently with the most critical need for drivers is the north and central areas of the City of Spokane, however due to the growing senior population, there is always an ongoing need for volunteers in all of our service areas throughout Spokane County.  The commitment is small but the rewards are immense. People who are experiencing financial insecurity often have to choose between paying rent and buying groceries. Sometimes, they run out of food assistance (SNAP EBT) and food at the same time. With the high cost of food, it's important for the community to step in and help avoid hunger.

Spokane Helpers Network provides free emergency Meal Kits. Each kit contains the contents of a meal that feeds four. Every kit includes non-perishable protein (e.g., canned chicken), at least one carbohydrate (e.g., noodles, biscuit mix), a canned vegetable, and a canned fruit. When there are children in the home, we also try to include healthy snacks.

We are seeking partners who can collect non-perishable food and assemble Meal Kits (in plastic grocery store bags).

Our volunteer delivery drivers will make sure that the Meal Kits are distributed to hungry households in Airway Heights, Spokane, Mead, and Spokane Valley.

Any number of Meal Kits would be helpful.

Our members have a heart for struggling people who are experiencing temporary financial challenges. They volunteer their time; they donate items for distribute to low-income households; they make financial donations. 

Many of our volunteers donate new items needed for Meal Kits (non-perishable food) and/or for Hygiene Kits (toothpaste, tooth brushes, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant).

Some volunteers help assemble Meal Kits and Hygiene Kits.

Other volunteers deliver free Emergency Meal Kits, as well as Hygiene Kits, to households in Airway Heights, Spokane, Mead, and Spokane Valley.

And, still others, help with behind-the-scenes admin tasks.

Service will include spending time with the kids who come in, playing sports, board games, video games, etc. Most importantly, fostering relationships and loving on the kids at the center. Our kiddos are ages 11-19. Students are encouraged to help with homework and tutors are greatly needed. There are longer term volunteer opportunities also available such as donor programming and outreach.

The Catalyst is an emergency supportive housing program that provides safe, private, dignified spaces to both men and women where they may temporarily live while taking steps to exit homelessness. Robust care coordination is provided onsite with access to housing-focused opportunities, connections to behavioral health services, primary care, and public benefits.

Volunteers are needed for our mentor program. Volunteers will spend one on one time with our participants by having a meal together, playing basketball outside, playing games, or just visiting. Other volunteer opportunities include serving meals, helping with activities or working on our donation closet.

Looking for a team of 4-6 volunteers to lead Children’s Liturgy at St. Aloysius Parish on Sunday mornings. Experience working with children and familiarity of Catholic Liturgy a plus. This program has two parts:

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (3 Sundays/month)
Children in grades 2-5 will be dropped off before 11:00 AM Mass. When Mass begins, leaders will present the readings of the day then guide discussion and activities based on the readings. Children are returned to their families following the Homily. Planning materials are provided.

Sunday Schedule:
    Set up: 10:15am / Children arrive: 10:45-11am / Children’s Liturgy of the Word: 11-11:30am (approx.)

Children’s & Family Mass (2nd Sunday of each month)

Children of all ages at both 8:30 and 11:00 AM Masses will be invited to sit at Sanctuary steps for the Homily. Leaders will guide the children to sit in the appropriate areas and remain with the children to monitor behavior and help younger children find their families when they return to their seats.

Training

All leaders will receive program training as well as VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children training (as required by the Diocese of Spokane).

At least two leaders must attend each Sunday.
Depending on the size of the team, the commitment could be 2 Sundays/month.

All GU breaks are also a part of the Children’s Liturgy calendar.

Want to do something that's unique and emotionally rewarding? Have an affinity for folks with special needs and/or horses? Then Free Rein is the place for you! 

Our facility offers therapeutic riding lessons for adults and children with disabilities. Lots of volunteers are needed to help these riders stay safe on the horse.

This is a great way to stay involved with a community, work with animals and feel like you're supporting the quality of life for someone whose experience of life might be vastly different than your own. It's a fun and active place to be and is definitely therapeutic for everyone! Not just the riders ;)

NEYC is currently in need of college students willing to help mentor and lead children ages 5-11 in various learning and recreational activities. During the school year (Sept-June) our youth are present 6-8:30 am and 3-6 pm, Monday through Friday. During the summer our youth are present 6a-6p.

Recreation Leaders take charge of a designated age group and lead them through daily activities including: crafts, games, social-emotional learning activities, community building exercises. Leaders are also expected to be models for youth in managing emotions.

We are hosting a blood drive on Thurs 04/20 on the Gonzaga campus!  We need blood donors and volunteers to help recruit blood donors.

Being a volunteer at the Spokane Dementia Community Cafe offers an opportunity to serve community members who experience some form of memory loss, Alzheimer's disease or other dementia and a companion. You will be an integral part of creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging atmosphere for people with memory loss and their care companions. Cafe volunteers plan, implement, and assure a positive experience during cafe events and activities.

Key Activities:

•In collaboration with staff confirm, set up, and clean up the café space each month.

• Meet and greet café attendees at the door, sign them in, welcome them and provide name badges and parking passes.

• Facilitate member engagement in conversation and activities at monthly gatherings.
• Assist in planning and organizing monthly café activities.

• Help organize and distribute Association materials and information to group members and assure a positive experience for attendees.

• Connect people with additional Association services and volunteer opportunities by proactively making referrals to Alzheimer's Association programs & free 24/7 Helpline

Our volunteers befriend hospice patients who have a terminal diagnosis. Our goal is to serve you as you serve your patient. These unique friendships bring grace and peace to a person at this place in life. Students often read to a patient, visit, play a game, take their new friend for a walk in their wheel chair, help with light housekeeping, share music or a hobby. Requirements to volunteer with Horizon Hospice: Ideally students serve for the entire school year, not just one semester. Students make a consistent commitment each week. Students may partner with another volunteer to support each other and give flexibility when an exam or need prevents their weekly visit. Students will need to attend training and this can be completed online or in person. We require background checks, driving record checks and TB tests (we pay for all of these items).

Bring a smile to a senior! Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels, who provides meals throughout the county, is looking for volunteers to deliver meals to homebound elderly and disabled persons in your neighborhood. Volunteers pick up the meals from any one of various sites throughout Spokane and Spokane County. It takes approximately 1-1/2 to 2 hours to deliver a route of 10 to 15 stops. Volunteers choose the day of the week and frequency that they would like to deliver. The commitment is small but the rewards are immense. Won’t you help? At Sacred Heart Children's Hospital, Volunteers play and/or discuss games with patients, siblings, and families to increase socialization in a positive way. May also assist in the support and maintenance of videogame and entertainment devices. 

Shifts: Weekday 3- to 4-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
