Volunteer: Conversation Partner

Please note: This position is subject to availability, depending on current employee and organizational needs.

Requirements: 18+ years old Pass a background check Complete 1.5 hour training with GN staff Regular attendance and communication Time Commitment: 1 hour per week, every week, for up to 6 months 30 minute debriefing with GN staff upon completion of assignment Description:

You will be matched with one of the employees in our job-training program. You will come to the GN office for one hour each week to meet with him/her. During this time you will serve as a conversation partner to help practice English. You may also be asked to help him/her practice specific workplace English vocabulary or tutor on ESL homework. We will provide a topic list to help guide your conversation times.

Goal:

The goal of this volunteer program is twofold: First, we want each of our employees to leave their time with GN having a better grasp of English. This will help them in all areas of their life, and will especially help them as they search for full-time work. Second, we want to establish relationship/community between former-refugees and other members of the Spokane community. The relationship you build with your conversation partner will teach both of you and break down barriers preventing Spokane from being a more integrated community.
